Clean freaks unite! How do you keep your house clean with 2 large dogs coming in and out all day long? The answer lies below in a list of my favorite products that help me get rid of that “dog smell” and keep my house smelling and feeling clean.

1. Dyson Cordless Vacuum

No news here, Dyson makes great vacuums and their cordless options are so easy to use. I love that they’re lightweight and I don’t have to unravel and mess with any cords. I can grab it for small-quick messes, or use it for more thorough, full-house cleaning. The attachments are easy to swap out as well for anything in between. We recently upgrades from Dyson V8 to a newer model after 7+ years.

Here’s the latest model, Dyson V15, from Amazon.

2. Lots and lots of rags

This is probably pretty obvious, but we try to use old rags over paper towels as much as possible. Whether we’re cleaning up accidents, drool, dirty paws, faces, etc. It’s easy to use and toss paper towels, but I feel like we could all try to do our part to save the planet and whatnot. Rags are just as easy to toss in the washer with some bleach and they’re good as new, plus they soak up a lot more of the mess than a paper towel. I prefer something more like these Bar Mops Kitchen Towels from Amazon because I feel like they soak up more than a microfiber or thinner linen or shop towel would.

3. Clorox Anywhere

This is my secret weapon. I recommend it to any and all new puppy owners. It’s basically watered down bleach and you can use it on just about anything. It’s primarily helpful when cleaning up potty accidents on all types of floors – hardwood, tile, and even carpet (not kidding). To date, I haven’t found a rug, carpet or material that we can’t use this on. We’ve used it on our nice, microfiber couches to clean up food stains and many times on the carpets in past apartments when the pups have had accidents. Because it includes bleach, it helps eliminate the smell better than most other cleaning solutions.

It can be hard to find, but keep it on your list when you see it in stock at Target or Walmart buy it! You’ll be glad you did.

Pro Tip: Always test it on a small, hidden spot first to make sure it won’t stain or bleach the material.

4. Bissell LittleGreen Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner

For when the mess is bigger than Bleach Anywhere can handle, you have to bring in the big guns. We got this on a whim to try out with little expectation of it actually working well and were extremely surprised at its capabilities. Mika had a big crate accident one night and we had a mess ALL OVER our carpet. If you’ve been there, you know exactly the kind of mess I am talking about. Well, this thing made our carpets look brand new again! Not even a hint of an accident stain. And it only took a few hours to dry. This was a WAY better option than having to hire a cleaning company to come out and deep clean everything and then wait 3 days for it to fully dry. Definitely $100 well spent in my book.

5. Bissell CrossWave Pet Pro (emphasis on Pet Pro)

This is my dual-purpose mop & vacuum that literally cuts my cleaning time in half. The unique Two Tank Technology ensures that I’m not cleaning half of my house with dirty water, like with a regular mop & bucket, allowing for a better clean overall. For any dog moms out there, especially those with long-furred dogs, I highly recommend the “Pet Pro” version since it comes with tangle-free brush rolls and a pet hair strainer in the dirty tank. This makes emptying the dirty water a breeze and you don’t have to worry about clogging your drains with dog hair. Plus, Bissell donates $10 for each Crosswave Pet Pro sold to the Bissell Pet Foundation, which we can all get behind!

6. Waterpik

It’s hard to have a clean house with a messy dog, so bath time is just as important!

This shower wand makes bath time much easier purely for the fact that it does a great job at rinsing your pup, even thick-furred dogs. The wand is contoured and works almost like a water comb to push suds and dirt out of your dog's fur.

We bathe our dogs outside, hooking the Waterpik up to a standard garden hose, but the kit comes with an adapter to attach to your shower as well.

7. Candles

Candles are:

  • A great way to set the mood

  • Give you that warm and cozy feel

  • Make your home smell fresh & clean (even when it’s not)

Our house doesn’t usually smell but I worry about it ALL THE TIME. And that’s where our candle addiction started. It’s continued because candles are just so damn delightful. A few of our absolute favorite candles:

8. Roomba

Since both my husband and I are working from home full-time now, we opted for the mid-level version that runs back and forth in straight lines as opposed to bouncing around sporadically for a few hours. We feel that it provides a better, more complete clean and also takes less time than the lower-level models. It also runs back through every room and hits all of the edges and maps the area it’s cleaned for every single clean so you can be sure it hit every spot in the house.

I was pleasantly surprised at the size of toy-stuffing this Roomba was able to grab and suck up. That said, I would still recommend a quick pick-up of any large fluff pieces for those of you who have toy assassins like my two.

The biggest reason I would recommend this product is that it gives our home a cleaner feel on a daily basis. By picking up the random dust and dirt we bring in more frequently, it actually allows me to extend the time between my full house cleaning which has been super nice during busy times in our lives.

9. No-Rinse Dog Shampoo

Ever have a day where you know it’s too soon to bathe your pup again but they just seem to have a bit of a stink? Or maybe they probably DO need a bath but you just don’t have time until Saturday and it’s only Wednesday.

Turns out, dog products can be just as bougie as human products. A few years ago, we came across this No Rinse, Dog Shampoo from Whal and grabbed it more out of curiosity than anything. Let’s not beat around the bush here, though, this stuff is straight-up doggy dry shampoo.

As it turns out, it’s actually pretty effective to freshen our pups up between baths. It’s easy to apply (much faster than a full bath) and smells delightful. We prefer the Lavender Chamomile scent, but it also comes in Oatmeal & Coconut Lime Verbena scent with oatmeal extract to soothe dry, itchy skin.
